Netflix announced a live-action prequel series on 6 November 2026, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. It is set in the 1950s, arrives in 2028, and hands the running of the franchise to Kate Trefry, who has written on the show since its second season.
The order came on Stranger Things Day, which is the fan holiday Netflix uses for franchise news. The teaser is thirty seconds of sky, an abandoned bicycle and the date 19 April 1955 written over Marion, Nevada, before the year 2028 lands on the screen.
What Netflix has actually ordered
The details below come from the announcement itself. Two of them decide how the show will be judged, and neither is the setting: Trefry is the showrunner, and Joe Wright directs the first three episodes.
| Detail | What was announced |
|---|---|
| Title | Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure |
| Kind | Live-action prequel series |
| Setting | Marion, Nevada in April 1955 |
| Release | 2028 |
| Co-creators | The Duffer Brothers and Kate Trefry |
| Showrunner and writer | Kate Trefry |
| Director | Joe Wright, first three episodes |
| Production | New Mexico, with 21 Laps Entertainment |
Joe Wright is the interesting hire. His films are Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour, which is a period-drama résumé rather than a horror one, and a 1950s small-town story about an experiment is closer to that résumé than to anything the main series did.
The 4 Stranger Things properties now running at once
The franchise is no longer one show with merchandise. It is a finished five-season series, a stage play, an animated series and now a live-action prequel, spread across four different time periods and two formats.
| Title | Format | When it is set | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stranger Things | Live-action series | 1980s, Hawkins, Indiana | Ended 31 December 2025 after five seasons |
| Stranger Things: The First Shadow | Stage play | Earlier than the series | Written by Kate Trefry |
| Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 | Animated series | 1985, between seasons 2 and 3 | First season released in April 2026 |
| Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure | Live-action series | April 1955, Marion, Nevada | Ordered 6 November 2026, due 2028 |
Read the fourth column down and the gap is the story. The main series finished in December 2025 and the next live-action entry does not arrive until 2028. Netflix is holding the audience with an animated show and a stage play while it builds a prequel in another country and another decade.
Why a 1950s prequel is the harder sell
Every previous entry leaned on the same six or seven actors. A prequel set in 1955 has none of them, and the announcement is explicit that the story sits before both the series and the play, which means it also sits before the material the play already covered.
That is a risk with a specific shape. When a prequel explains something the audience has already seen explained, the only remaining question is whether the telling is good. Netflix cannot sell discovery here. It has to sell craft, which is why the credits matter more than the premise.
The upside is the same fact from the other side. A 1955 story in Nevada has no obligation to any existing plot thread, and Wright directing three episodes is a stronger signal of intent than a cast announcement would be.
What the Duffer Brothers said about the handover
Matt and Ross Duffer stay as co-creators but have handed the running of the show to Trefry, and their statement credits her directly.
“It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains,” the Duffer Brothers wrote in the announcement, before telling fans that casting starts now.
The quote that got quoted everywhere is the sign-off, where they wrote “now, on to casting” and told fans to watch the skies. It is a line from two people who know the next announcement is the one that decides this.
What to watch before 2028
- Casting. The first two names will say whether this is a franchise continuation or a Wright and Trefry production using the brand.
- How the play is treated. The announcement places the series before the Nevada experiment the play covers, so the show either honours that material or rewrites it.
- A second season of Tales From ’85. If the animated show keeps going, the live-action prequel is not carrying the franchise alone.
- Whether the 1955 date stays fixed. Teasers put dates on screen that later move, and this one is the only date in the announcement besides 2028.
For now the cleanest read is that Netflix has bought itself three years. The finale landed in December 2025, the animated series covered 2026, and Other Worlds gives the franchise a 2028 tentpole with a director who has never made a horror series. Whether that reads as ambition or as a delay depends on the cast list, and the Duffer Brothers have already said casting is next.
The Movies and TV hub tracks the rest of this, including what happened when Netflix moved the Narnia timeline and why Talk to Me left HBO Max while its franchise moved to VR. Library titles behave differently from new orders, as Servant returning to Apple TV’s top 10 four years after it ended shows. The announcement is reported by CBR, with the production detail confirmed by TVLine.
