The Apothecary Diaries game, The False Imperial Brother, launches worldwide on 18 March 2027 for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. Koei Tecmo publishes and Gust develops, and the story is original, written with series author Natsu Hyuga rather than lifted from a manga arc.
That date is the news, reported by CBR on 22 October 2026. The game was announced in September 2026 with a vague 2027 window, and a window is not something a reader can plan around. A date, a trailer and a preorder page are.
What the new trailer showed
The footage confirms how the game plays. Maomao gathers ingredients outside the city and compounds them into medicines. Those medicines become evidence in a chain of mysteries across the rear palace, the pleasure district and the capital. Two new characters appear, Yanxi and Chen Han, and Jinshi is playable in short sections.
The franchise has four releases coming
This is the busiest the series has been since the anime started in 2023. The game is one item on a calendar that runs into 2028.
| Release | Format | When |
|---|---|---|
| Season 3 | Anime, simulcast on Crunchyroll | Airing now |
| The Late Lady’s Treasure | Anime film | Later in 2026 |
| The False Imperial Brother | Console and PC game | 18 March 2027 |
| Live-action series | Series starring Mana Ashida | 2028 |
Three formats inside eighteen months is a lot for a property that began as a light novel. It also explains the pressure on the game. A franchise this visible cannot afford a quiet tie-in, which is why the trailer spends its time on mechanics rather than on character art.
It also puts the game next to a different kind of franchise release, the Black Clover artbook that went digital only. One property ships a collector item and pulls it back. This one ships a console game with preorders open months early. Both are bets on the same question, which is how much a fan will pay to stay inside a story between seasons.
The platforms, and what is missing
The launch covers Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Steam. There is no Xbox version in the announcement and no mobile release. That puts it in the same bracket as most mid-budget Japanese adventure games, rather than the wider net a free-to-play tie-in would cast.
This is also the second game in the franchise. The first, Palace Chronicles, was a browser title from G123 for PC and mobile, which means The False Imperial Brother is the first one sold as a full console product. That distinction matters more than it sounds, because a browser game can be light on systems and a console game cannot.
How the mystery loop actually works
The game builds each case out of four steps, and the order is fixed.
- Explore the city and gather ingredients. Different locations hold different materials.
- Compound the ingredients into medicine. The result can be evidence, a gift, or a way into a conversation.
- Interview witnesses and collect statements, then arrange the clues in a notebook.
- Present a theory, choosing evidence and answers. At the end, decide whether to soften the truth or state it.
The interesting design choice sits in step two. In most detective games the evidence is found. Here it is manufactured, and what you make determines which questions you can ask. That is the one idea that makes this feel like The Apothecary Diaries rather than a reskinned visual novel.
Do you need the anime first?
No, and that is deliberate. The story is original and set in the rear palace, the same setting the series opens in, so a newcomer meets Maomao where the anime met her. The difference is that a viewer already knows what her curiosity costs her, and the game assumes you will find that out slowly.
If you want the shorter route in, the film later this year will be a smaller commitment than three seasons. If you want the reason people care, season two won Best Drama at the ninth Crunchyroll Anime Awards, which is the sort of award that changes how a show is marketed.
The one thing that would change my mind
A demo that lets you fail. The trailer shows the notebook filling up and a theory being presented, and it does not show what happens when the theory is wrong. A mystery game where the wrong answer closes a door is a different game from one where it costs a hint. The second kind respects the source material.
Until a demo lands, the honest position is that the systems look right and the difficulty is unknown.
What to watch for next
An English localisation confirmation and a demo. Koei Tecmo usually ships a playable slice before a Gust title launches. A demo would settle the one question the trailer cannot answer: whether the compounding screen is a puzzle or a menu.
Preorders are open now. The launch is on 18 March 2027. The game arrives before the live-action series rather than after it, which usually means it is being treated as the main event rather than merchandise.
