The quickest way to lose a Google Business Profile in India is to put the service into the business name. Google’s guidelines are blunt about it: the name has to match what is on the signboard, and keywords, taglines and repeated bilingual names all count as violations. Five rules cover almost every suspension I have seen argued about, and four of them are about fields nobody reads twice.
Where the suspensions start
Google’s own guidelines, checked on 26 October 2026, list the name field as a suspension risk rather than a style choice. The rules that bite Indian businesses hardest are keywords in the name, the same name written twice in two scripts, an address that is only a desk, a service area wider than the city, and legal suffixes used as branding.
| What businesses do | What Google’s rule says | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Sharma Dental Clinic Best Dentist Jaipur | No service or product information in the name | Suspension risk, not a ranking boost |
| Sharma Dental Clinic शर्मा डेंटल क्लिनिक | Repeated names in two scripts are not acceptable, even when the signage shows both | Edit rejected, profile flagged |
| A co-working desk or virtual office as the address | Virtual offices are ineligible, and co-working needs signage plus staff on site | Verification failure or removal |
| A service area covering the whole state | One profile per location, service area within about two hours of driving | Ranking that never arrives 300 km away |
| Sharma Dental Pvt Ltd Clinic | Legal terms need real-world proof on signage and stationery | Name edit refused |
1. Keywords in the name
The name must match the business as it is recognised in the real world, across signage, stationery and anything else a customer sees. Google’s guideline page lists taglines, store codes, phone numbers, URLs and service descriptions as content that is not permitted, and says including unnecessary information “could result in the suspension of your Business Profile”. A name that reads like a search query does not rank better. It gets removed.
2. The bilingual name
This one catches Indian businesses more than any other. Writing the same name twice, once in English and once in Devanagari, Tamil or Bengali, is listed as not acceptable, and Google says the rule holds even when the shopfront shows both scripts. Pick one name and use it everywhere. If the local script matters to your customers, it belongs on the website and in review replies, not in the profile name.
3. The address that is a desk
Post office boxes and remote mailboxes are out. A virtual office is not eligible. A co-working space is allowed only if your business keeps clear signage there, receives customers during stated hours and is staffed by your own people during those hours. Verification asks for the proof, and a shared reception desk with no sign carries no proof.
4. The service area that covers a state
Distance is one of the three factors in local ranking, so a listing that claims a 400 km service area competes everywhere and ranks nowhere. Google’s guidance puts a service area at roughly two hours of driving time from where the business is based, with larger areas only where the business genuinely works that way. A Jaipur business serving Ajmer is around 135 km on NH48, which sits at the edge of that window. If you serve customers at their location, hide your address and let the service area do the work.
5. The legal suffix and the category
Pvt Ltd, LLP and LLC are allowed only when the real-world branding uses them, and Google asks for proof. Categories follow a different rule: use the fewest that describe the business, and pick the ones that finish the sentence “this business is a”, not “this business has a”. Google’s own example is a pizza shop choosing Pizza Delivery and Pizza Takeout instead of Delivery Restaurant and Takeout Restaurant. Exact categories decide which local searches you can appear in.
What local ranking is built on
Relevance, distance and prominence, per Google’s local ranking page. Relevance comes from complete and accurate information, distance from the searcher’s location, and prominence from how well known the business is, which Google ties to links and reviews. There is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and any agency that says otherwise is selling a service Google does not offer. Reviews and replies to them feed the prominence part, which is the only one you can move this month.
One feature worth ignoring
In-store product listings on a profile are available to retail businesses in the United States, Canada, the UK and Ireland only. Indian retailers see the feature discussed in guides written for those markets and then hunt for a setting that is not there. Skip it and use photos and posts instead.
What to do this week
- Open your profile and read the name out loud. If it contains a service, a city repeated twice or two scripts, change it today.
- Check the primary category against your top three searches. Change one category at a time and note the date.
- Confirm the address is either visitable or hidden. A hybrid listing confuses both customers and the verification check.
- Reply to every review from the last ninety days. It is the cheapest prominence you will get.
None of this shows up as a ranking win in a week, and that is the part clients dislike. Local visibility moves on profile completeness and review volume, both of which take months. If you are judging the work by a rank tracker, remember that rank trackers handle suspect results differently, and a test that cannot fail proves nothing, which is the point of most SEO tests proving nothing. Fix the fields first, then measure.
